UPM's new Paso de los Toros pulp mill recently opened its commissioning phase to test the pulp production equipment, with the approval of the Uruguayan environmental authorities. During this phase, UPM will thoroughly inspect the many areas and operational requirements of the pulp mill in preparation for full operation. Areas include the lumber yard, woodchip handling, fiber line, pulp drying, evaporation unit, alkali recovery boiler, biomass boiler, auxiliary boiler, white liquor unit, steam generation and turbine, wastewater treatment, sludge treatment, oxygen unit, auxiliary systems, and industrial solid waste final disposal site. The tests also included the receipt of chemicals and wood used after commissioning. Kruger Specialty Papers Holding has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire DKP Pulp, a legal entity wholly-owned by Domtar. Once closed, the deal means that the Kruger affiliate business will own and operate the British Columbia-based Kamloops mill, and means the tissue manufacturer will increase its Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft (NBSK) pulp production. The business already produces NBSK in its Wayagamack plant in Three Rivers, Québec. The Kamloops plant produces high quality NBSK pulp and unbleached softwood kraft for customers in North America and Asia.
